DiSC assessment has its origins in the book written by William Marston in 1928 titled “Emotions of Normal People”. Marston, an American psychologist, feminist theorist, inventor and comic book writer who created the character Wonder Woman.
Marston actually describes four behavioural styles:
- D – Dominance
- i – Inducement
- S – Submissive
- C – Compliant
He developed this theory based on people’s emotional responses to various stimuli. DISC concept has now evolved into a comprehensive set of DiSC assessment tools. Behaviour is an expressions of one’s personality traits. Every person demonstrates a mix of all the four styles though they have a priority of one or two styles usually.

Almost after a decade, in the 1050s, John Cleaver created the first forced choice DISC questionnaire based on the DISC. A forced choice questionnaire is the one where the participants select what is most and least like them in a questionnaire.
