Diversity means the presence of a difference in any given situation. It can be a diversity of opinion, diversity of species, etc. When it comes to an organization there can be diversity in ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, etc. Most of the organization mistook the concept of diversity and say that they need a diverse candidate. Organizations should understand that a team can be diverse or an organization can be, but not an individual. An individual brings diversity but is not diverse.
Diversity is about a group or can exist in a collective form or in relationship with others. People generally say that they are working towards making the upper management of their organization more diversified instead of saying that we are working to ensure that upper management has more women. Being more specific helps in achieving the goals of diversity. It also helps in building accurate and efficient strategies.
Inclusion is about people with different identities and they feel welcomed and
in the organization. In a day-to-day example, the explanation of diversity and inclusion will be that diversity is being asked to the party and inclusion means being asked to dance. Organizations can have diverse teams of talent but it does not mean that each employee feels valued or welcomed in the organization. There can be cases where not all people are provided with equal opportunities to grow or showcase their talent because of their background.
Organizations should also understand that inclusion is not a natural consequence of diversity. Companies can have employees from various backgrounds but that doesn’t ensure that each employee will feel welcomed. It is important that the culture of the company to be inclusive so that employees feel safe and work more efficiently. Companies should think about the experience that people from minority have in their company. If the minority is not having a good experience, then it shows that there is a lack of inclusivity. Organizations should ensure that each employee is valued irrespective of his/her background, race, ethnicity, etc. Which makes them inclusive in its true sense.
Equity is an approach which ensures that everyone is getting equal opportunities to grow and showcase their skills and talent. Equity acknowledges the fact that barriers and advantages exist in each person’s life and as a result, not everyone starts from the same place. Equity is the process which starts by acknowledging the unequal starting places and correct the imbalance.
According to a study, it was found that if a female candidate with skills identical to a male candidate were deemed less competent. Females were considered as less worthy of being hired and offered lower mentoring and starting salary. Equitable processes in the organization seek this kind of imbalances and create a process which is free from any disparity.
In the end, diversity and inclusion are the outcomes of the strategies implemented in the organization. On the other hand, equity is the process in which an organization engages to provide growth opportunities to people with marginalized identities.
