In the literal sense, Instructional Design (ID) is a branch that focuses on designing effective instructions. It is not synonymous with content development. Rather, content development is just a part of it.
As Instructional Designers and psychologists define it, Instructional Design is an entire process of identifying and analyzing human performance problems and designing effective and efficient interventions to solve those problems. Therefore, instructional design is not limited to only creating content. It is way beyond that.
As an instructional designer, one is expected to identify training needs, decide on whether the performance problem is trainable or not, design and develop the intervention and content, implement the intervention and also evaluate its effectiveness. The intervention can be both Instruction-led or eLearning.
