In the recent past there has been a paradigm shift from the core management skill required to being goal oriented to being action oriented. Most people in the world of business understand the competition that stands forth them; each industry has more than a few competitors and everybody is on the run; and just walking is not going to give you a lead. However, a few people mostly in the higher management has over compensated for being action oriented which could backfire and make them less competent in action orientation. If you think you are burnt out and you are unable to recognize the problem in your core management skills, here are some “ifs” that could help you figure out your stance and get out of it.
Recognize the Problem in Your Core Management Skills
If you are working late hours, hardly seeing your family, more excited to get to work than to go on a vacation or being told that you work too much by people, then you have taken an obsessive turn into workaholism. There is a need to give it your best shot at work; however, overdoing it could create a reverse effect on your core management skills. Recognizing the problem as an addiction like any other is essential, before your work life eats into your personal life. Monitor the amount of time you put into work and force yourself to keep your mind off work while you engage in social calls and hobbies. This will help you achieve a good balance between your work and personal life and also, keep you in the pink of health.
Lack of analysis
If you are the kind of person who has been over-evaluating your core competency skills and handing over projects without a second look, you are in deep waters! Taking too much time to come up with a weighted decision is one extreme, while not taking any, is another. This habit probably incepts when one has made a few good decisions and a sense of overconfidence has taken over them. When you are responsible to take a decision with limited information or time, it is important that you use the information at hand and consider all opinions from your direct reports and your higher ups. Addiction to risk
If you have loved the rush too many times when you have taken an important but risky step and succeeded, you are in a dangerous place. Taking a risk every now and then is a core competency skill when it comes to business decisions, however, making it a habit could put your future and your organization at risk. When all works out fine, your success is applauded but if your decision goes down on you, then you are putting your organization in jeopardy. Instead, take calculated decisions with some help from the opinions of your direct reports, co-workers and your higher ups. Step into taking risky decisions when you don’t stand to lose everything and make sure you have an alternative rescue plan on standby. That way, when things start going south, you can quickly execute the alternate plan and recover.
If you have reached a point in your career where you think you don’t have to prove your core competency skills anymore, then you have reached a point where you are completely satisfied. Satisfaction is failure because the need to grow is stunted. You might not sit in meetings, take up tasks or go through with responsibilities unless you see the absolute necessity and importance in it. This normally happens to people among the higher ups, however, being a leader in your organization, this could have a negative impact on your career and your organization as well. Put your ego and attitude aside and live up to your role as a leader. Give reasons for people to look up to you and don’t make the higher management doubt their decision of keeping you in the company. Be hands on with all the tasks given to you and your team and look into the development of your direct reports.
If you often think you are the smartest person in the room and you are taken by surprise when other people don’t realize or understand your heroic aura, then you most certainly are over confident. Modesty doesn’t come naturally to everybody but certainly not to you! Confidence is a key core competency skill to have, however, showing off your confidence will hinder with your action orientation. You might make excessively risky bets, make decisions like a know it all and promise things to higher authorities that you can’t possibly make happen. Take a pinch of salt and swallow your pride. Being over confident in scenarios that don’t warrant it could often result in damaging outcomes for both you as well as your organization.
If you are the kind of person who puts in more time into your job than your personal life, you must know that you might burn out soon. The higher management is always in the lookout for a person who is well balanced in terms of their work and life. If you are obsessed with your job so much so that you seem to neglect your family, friends and your social life then there would be only a few anatomical differences left out between a robot and you. It is important to create that perfect balance for yourself for reasons other than your sanity, like, learning core competency skills, building a strong network, giving time for your innovative juices to flow, being more compassionate and attend to the infinite possibilities of opportunities that you may miss.
Finding the thin line between the two extremes in the use of your core competency skills to be action orientated is essential for the progress of your career. Although you may think that you have enough and more that what it takes to get ahead, sometimes all that is required is just having enough. Being modest with yourself and understanding your flaws are important in your self-improvement. All top leaders state their balance in action orientation as one of their greatest strength.
