But ambiguity is not something we prepare for in the most obvious way, however, ambiguity is a key skill required under business management competency. Making good decisions with unlimited information and time is common, however, your competency in business management is staged when you are able to make more good decisions than bad with limited information and time in hand. Ambiguity gets more essential as a key competency skill to have as you go higher the career ladder because the higher the rank you are in, you would probably be in more situations where you would have to rely on information given to you by others.
Role of Ambiguity in Business Management Competency
The key competency skill of being able to manage and work around an uncertain situation in a comfortable manner and being able to understand and be prepared for your decisions to go downhill followed by criticism is called incrementalism. Finding a solution to a murky problem with limited information and time in hand with little to no criterion is a luck of the draw, but it is also a good measure of your business management competency. An efficient way to be an incrementalist is to look at the problem at large and break it down to smaller sections and understand the underlying problems. Then solve it section by section with valuable feedback until you have solved the big picture. Stickler for perfectionism
Most of us cannot be right 100% of the time, which is usually an admirable key competency skill to have. However, when it comes to business management competencies, these said people are the inefficient lot lacking the ability to deal with ambiguity because they need unlimited time and information to make decisions so there is no way they can go wrong. The challenge is to be able to make good decisions with limited amount of time and information. If you are a perfectionist, try to let go off this quality and start off with making smaller decisions with little to no information. Take smaller risks at first; maybe go grocery shopping without a list. Once you are comfortable taking small risks in your life and at work, move on to bigger risks that you can implement in both your life and work as well. Think of it as your little self improvement exercise to make you more competent in business management and life!

Try to implement methods of managing your task in a way where your rewards are segregated into smaller portions that could motivate you incrementally. Try not to abandon your projects half way.
Ambiguous problems are often dilemmatic and confusing. It helps to see the problem in-front of you. Try story-boarding your entire problem, from the inception to where you are stuck. Making a story board is nothing but making a flow chart of your problem in a sequence of events on a physical form, i.e, a paper or even an actual board! You may be able to check off the underlying problems and come up with different solutions. You could also be able to come up with a list of unforeseen probabilities of problems within your new solutions. This will not only attribute as a key competency skill to your business management competency but also, help you get creative with your solutions and come out with better and a more systematic way of solving problems in your life and work in the future too.
The ability to deal with ambiguity may seem like a fluffy skill to have but it is quite in the contrary. The basic foundation of leadership is to be certain and to be able to direct your subordinates.
