No woman or man deserves to experience sexual harassment at any point of time at their workplace. Workplace sexual harassment has been a problem for quite a long time. It is a problem which is prevalent long before the era of #MeToo movement. Over a period of time, a lot of cases have come in the light which has made corporates to realize the importance of training on sexual harassment. Many people are unaware of the rules, policies, and parts of law against sexual harassment. It is important for employees to know about sexual harassment, what are its repercussions, how to protect oneself, etc.
Organizations have taken initiatives to provide training on workplace harassment for the whole organization i.e. from managerial level to the employee level. Nowadays, more than 50% of businesses provide some form of sexual harassment prevention training. The training helps spread awareness among employees and they will know what actions to avoid.
Providing sexual harassment training will help in preventing assault and will also spread awareness about the repercussions of sexual harassment which can also prevent the budding harassment at the workplace. Training can also help in creating a safe environment. If an employee faces harassment, his/her co-workers can help the person in filing the complaint. This also helps the sufferer to improve psychologically.
Sexual harassment can be verbal like sexual jokes, verbal innuendos, request for sexual favors etc. Obscene digital communication is another type of sexual harassment which means the kind of communication which includes disturbing comments and sexual comments. This can also be considered as bullying. There are other kind of sexual harassment as well like Quid Pro Quo which means that an employee’s promotion, raise in salary, work assignments, etc. is based on the employee’s willingness to grant sexual favors.
Workplace harassment prevention training should enable employees to understand the intensity of the topic and learn how to prevent it or take correct measures when it has taken place. Training can include about the laws that Indian Constitution has about sexual harassment. Employees should be taught about what sexual harassment actually means, what are its different types, how it can be done, how it can affect the sufferer, etc.
Providing this information will help the employees to get the fundamentals clear because if there is any confusion about what sexual harassment is, this might lead to problems. Training can also have real-life case scenarios where sexual harassment has already taken place and how it was handled. This will help employees to understand how badly sexual harassment can affect the sufferer and there can be bad consequences for that. This will also raise awareness regarding the way to prevent harassment and if the similar situation is taking place at their organization, they can handle it appropriately and can help the sufferer.
Showing videos regarding different types of harassment will also help the employees and also make them aware that harassment can be verbal, written, physical, visual etc. This will help employees to raise their voice against harassment because sometimes they are facing these issues but do not know that it can be a harassment. This will make their workplace better.
