SAM Model-Creating Agile Learning Models
Instructional design models have now gained a very high importance to improve educational experience of different types. In the recent years, we have become familiar to various formats for instructional design. These formats are highly effective to deal with the course development and curricula content creation. Thus, they are very helpful in the field of learning and training. The models, like ADDIE have already proved their potentials in the relevant field. Now, we are going to talk about Successive Approximation Model. Today, SAM model is very popular due to its agility in content creation. It assists in developing the training modules successfully.
Know about SAM and its agility
Michael Allen has created the agile development model, known as the SAM model. This model helps to develop much effective techniques for building high standard training tools. The major intention behind it is to choose the smaller steps in a bigger framework. However, for ADDIE and other models, the instructional design process is much rigid.
SAM model has agility, and the term, agile, indicates a number of steps, taking place simultaneously. The small steps are effective at presenting us with the quality learning and training. This model is also iterative, and it denotes that there is a cycling to every development step.
For SAM model, all the parties (clients, manager and instructional designer) need high collaboration. It makes sure that there would be best standard training and course development. The aim of using SAM model is to identify where the resources and energy have to be placed for learning material development.
Let us talk about three SAM Model development phases-
Preparation step
This is the first step for SAM model users, it is different from what we have found in ASSURE and ADDIE. We can find the faster information collection and preparation. There has to be a proper alignment and balance between the ultimate learning result and the performance needs of learners.
Every party (including the stakeholder, program manager and facilitator) has to remain engaged at this preparation step. These parties have to begin the session in a collaborative way for establishing the base of their project.
Iterative design step
The overall model is cyclical model, and there are iterations of prototype, design and review. You will also find it in other models, involving the development, design and evaluation steps. You need to discuss and prototype the assumptions of the parties.
Iterative development
Instructional design helps in leading this step and the parties have to work together to undergo the process of development and final evaluation. There are different levels of this step. The first one begins with the design proof, taken from iteration development. You can find a transfer from Alpha version to the Beta version. The final one is the Gold version.
The instructional developers have to make a consistent analysis all over the process. While there is a need of any modification, we can do it fast without wasting time and money. Thus, we can enjoy better flexibility on using resources at the time of development.
