When it comes to team building, people are generally not interested. Different activities are conducted to promote team building which might and might not gage interest of the people. If people are not interested in activity, this will affect their learning and the purpose of training will be diminished. A lot of people are familiar with playing cards and enjoy them as well.
Using cards for team building can be an effective technique. Playing cards can be used in multiple ways to teach team building to people. The main objective would be to convey the idea of cooperation to achieve a common goal and creating a cohesive work environment. These two factors make up the team building aspect.
Playing cards can be used for multiple activities to enhance team building. Through cards team can learn about getting organized, collaborating, listening and understanding other’s point of view, etc. Different activities like building a card house, organizing cards in a limited time etc.
Creating diagrams or structures from playing cards can be an effective team building exercise. One person will be provided with the name of the object and other person will be provided with a deck of cards. Person with the name of the object has to instruct the other person to create the figure of that object without revealing the name. The receivers or the person who creates the design is not allowed to ask questions. He/she has to only follow the instructions. After first round, they have to swap their roles and then do the activity.
This activity will help in team building because giving instructions effectively and following it diligently is one most the most important component of team building.
Another game is developing house of cards, this can be an effective game to build teams. In this game there can be two to three groups. Each group can have 4 to 5 employees. Each group has to build a house from cards, but they can only use their non-dominant hand. If the house of cards falls, they have to again start it over. There will be a time limit. So, team should coordinate well and help each other to build the house of cards. This will also teach the group to work together and effectively during the tough situations.
There can be other game which can teach team building through cards. In this game, there has to be two to three groups. Each group can have 4-5 employees. Each employee has to first draw a card. If someone draws a King, he/she will be the leader. If someone draws a Queen, he/she will be the second in command. If none of them have drawn King, they can choose their leader. Now they have to build the house and employees have to play their roles while building the house. If someone is King, he/she will lead which means he/she will guide/supervise the whole process of building the game. This game will help in understanding the roles and valuing the instructions provided by others.
